The barbershop rule!

This is a true story of an account that happened at my barbershop recently. I had to go see my dude "T.K." because my beard/mustache, sideburns was looking a little too much like "wolfman Jackson". While waiting to be cut next, I noticed that his woman was there in the salon sitting in one of the chairs. I give dude mad props for having her picture up on the wall behind his station, so I immediately recognized her and said"hey, you're _____" She laughed and asked me how I knew. I told her that her face was a dead give away...the hairstyle often can't hide a face that i see every week.

Anyway..dudes talk in barbershops normally in a very free types of conversations. The things they certainly would not say around their woman, definitely may come out in the chair. So as the multiple conversations arose, generally about women, I noticed her getting real salty..so I decided to stoke the fire a little bit by reminded the fellas that there was a woman present and that she shouldn't be privvy to all this "man talk". Man the sh*t hit the fan then! She came at us with all the stories about no good ni99as not taking care of their kids at home, hangin out with their boys, needing that "me time" was an excuse to kick it...on and on.. Replies of "well if she(meaning whoever he was kicking it with)didn't like the way she was getting treated, then she can leave...there's plenty of fish in the sea"...or the classic line of "oh, well.." far too many to list anyway. She came back like she was defending the entire female gender like a champ though. I was just listening.

To my surprise most cats kinda settled down and I was like nahh f**k that...there is a place for dudes to have these conversations and I told her that she was "infringing on our turf"! My barber jumped in and defended most of the statements being made by the fellas and agreed with my assessment. He was like"see..you shouldn't be up in here anyway" I applauded his resolve, but doubt seriously if he got some that night! LOL!

I know that this topic may sting a little bit but my question is this..why would a woman feel it necessary to invade a barbershop and talk sh*t? Do we need have have the unwritten law amended as a constitutional right to have one place where we can congregate without being harassed? If the shoe was on the other foot and a dude was in a hair salon, women would have tried to string us up by our nuts.

I would like to get some feedback if possible regarding this matter. Anyone up for the challenge!

Well it is a free country and the sistah can go where she pleases but...I don't think my first choice would be a barbershop. Just got to know what to expect, from the clients in such a place. LOL From what I've seen in the movies, it's not somewhere I would choose to be. When my son comes of age, it will be his father who handles this duty, not I. For the record, at the shop where I go we don't much talk about men, we usually have other interesting topics.

um...were u trying to be funny? all women talk about men in shops? who you tryin to kid?

i'm sure we aren't the only conversations, but don't front khoney330....I know better than that!

LOL..oh and movies still water down the barbershop talk!

Come to think of it, we don't talk about men at my salon either. I think it is quite refreshing.

I have no interest in going to the barber shop either. I cut my son's hair myself or send him with a male relative. She was a real trooper. I'd have better things to do. Plus, I wouldn't want to deal with whose side he was going to take between me and all of his boys. I understand the power of peer pressure.

I take my boys to the barber to get their hair cut and all the men love to see me...

maybe because I always have a dirty joke and margaritas to share...

@Saadia...lol...im sure you do! You're a nut!

Some of my fondest memories are when my daddy used to take me to the barbershop with him back in the day. i just LOVED watching men interact & listening to them talk smack. Mind u, much of it was over my head & they wouldn't get too raunchy w/ the language cuz "we got a li'l lady present."
And I did go to the barbershop with my college sweet heart, where again, I loved watching & absorbing the brothers - never got too raunchy when I was present. I'm also pretty good at just quietly letting men have their time in their space;-)...I don't always feel the need to defend my womanhood - I know I'm a woman (& so do they;-).

ok...gotta leave cyberspace again! keep 'em riled DC. LOL!

dc_speaks said...

@IYMS...peer pressure? please!!!

@Capcity..then you were invading ground once you were old enough to not have to go with your dad..hahahaha

dudes can't possibly keep it real and stick their chests out or bounce shit off the fellas if a woman is present...

again..i dont do it...but i sure like giving lots of opinions on other peoples lives... the barbershop doesnt know half as much as ya'll do from reading my blogs anyway!LOL

DC, always in a mix. LOL. SMH. Why do you stir things up so?

I have had group convos in various places, not a barbershop though about some controversial issues bet. women and men.

My thing is don't start a fire and then get mad cause you got burned. SMH.

And we do talk about men in shops and SO much more. LOL.

I have some close male friends and I know that the talk can get raunchy and so forth in in a barbershop, nothing new or surprising.

dc_speaks said...

@Shai...I can take any kind of fire...trust me on that one dear.. and as for the "SO" much more emphasis...whatever!!!

I bring to light real life situations..what's wrong with that?...NOTHING!!!!

So, since women know that the talk is raunchy in the barbershop(though not always about them either)..keep the f**k out! LOL...hahahahahaha

Shai said...

LOL. DC.

It is SO much more. We talk work, kids, fashion, celebrities, the news and so on. Women can talk in the salons and it is not just about men. SMH.

I find it funny you started to talk with the woman knowing you would push buttons then saying she should have stayed the f out. SMH.

KIKI said...

Well I have to say I agree with you DC. Growing up around nohing but men, I've made more than my share of trips to the barber shop & if you dont have a thick skin or are confident enough in your womanhood, you should stay the hell out; cause the barbershop is the one place I've heard men say things they would never dare say anywhere else (I've always been seen as one of the fellas, so nothing was usually held back when I was around) which alot of women would find offensive.

And you're also correct in the fact that (at least at my shop) we talk more sh*t than a little bit about men. Why? Because ya'll ain't around (except for the sylist..and they're manhood is questionable.lol). Yeah, we touch on other subjects, just like you do @ the barbershop (sports, your job, etc.), but I have to admit I've gotten some of my best relationship advice while at the beauty salon.

Khoney330 said...

I did say "MUCH" DC. Men do occasionally wander into the conversation.

Men talk in barbershops is funny as hell....and not too far from what we talked about at the kitchen table, 4 brothers, ma, pop, food and liquor. I have no problem being in the barbershop since i'm taking my son, and hell yeah they talk ish! I don't usually join in, just laugh...yeah i see them looking, seeing if i'm gonna react, but it's just talking ish, and i'm used to hearing it! At the beauty shop, much of the same happens, different topics, same flavor...we enjoying ourselves...maybe ole boy, invited ole girl, so who messed up? I tell ya, it was him, cuz he didn't get none, and probably won't for awhile. Now that's my take! Why you got to be getting me all stirred up, when i'm supposed be inhaling, exhaling, and saying some of the Namyo ish! Whew!

KIKI said...

Miz...say it with me girl...nam yo ho renge keyo LOL!

dc_speaks said...

@miz...well now..i see u trying to jump on the band wagon..not gonna happen..just drop your son off and let the men folks have at him..lol...hahahahahaha
don't be infringing on his development time!!

as for my dude, i called and asked him, she invited herself and although I didn't think he would..apparently he blew her back out that night!!! I didn't ask him the latter...he just volunteered the info.

Yeahhhhhh, boy!!

So there, Miz...and anyone esel who wants to step up to the plate...

I noticed that lately a few of you have been tripping on dudes..WE NOT TAKING THAT SH*T ANYMORE!!!!

CG i know u off trying to make the big bucks, but get with me...soon! Now what u got to say DC! Holla!

dc_speaks said...

When it comes to barbershops I learned my lesson once and that is all it took. I took my son to get high and tight and ended up in a conversation where they were slamming us women and then asking me "isn't that right" or "you women think you know it all" From that day on I dropped my son off and then would wait patiently in the car. I don't need to know about some girls boobs or how hard he hit the night before. As for what women talk about well when I go get my hair done or I am doing someones hair it starts out innocent and usually ends up talking about some ones azz or package or maybe something even worse. There is always a naughty innuendo.
So let the men have their place and I will have mine. On the weekends we can compare notes.

dc_speaks said...

(yawn)....you sticking your chest out is almost amusing, Miz!!! Thanks for the laugh!

Can you take that king kong stuffed animal back to the store please..cause thats about the only man ass like that you could be whoopin on.

I would like to share my opinion and feedback on "Turf Infringement"

Growth occurs from internal and external influences. It is necessary to have autonomy, personal space, independence and bonding for the growth and enrichment of both men and women. If the fertile ground for that is the barbershop for men and the spa or beauty shop for women, than why interfere with the richness that such solidarity can bring? Our mothers and fathers embraced the tradition of saturday mornings- sons with fathers at the barber shop daughters with mothers, etc, cannot we? If we reflect for a moment on what the symbolism of men alone in a barbershop and women united alone in a beauty parlor truly means-aside from whether you agree or disagree with what conversations transpire at these places, -than perhaps relationship building betweeen the sexes would improve.

Lo said...

If a dude rolled up in the beauty salon and started talking about how "b*tches ain't sh*t," he'd deserve every bit of what came to them.

She got what she deserved. Not that women don't have a right to go anywhere, but I'm of a mindset that the genders create "safe zones" where they can talk about whatever they want, and if someone of the other gender enters that space and hears something that upsets them, then they get what they get. This rule doesn't apply to the workplace, mind you. But black folks know what goes down in barbershops, just like they know what goes down in beauty salons. Period.

dc_speaks said...

hey dr girlfriend...thanks for the comment..I can sum it up for you into a short phrase out of your eloquent delivery..

women folk take dem girls and get dat head did, men folk get dem boys cut up. Thus everyone goes on their merry way...hahahah

hey LO...thanks for visiting my spot..i appreciate you agreeing with me, though i know that it wont happen alot now that march madness is in effect..

oh and LO..GO bucks!!! HAHAHAHAH

dc_speaks said...

lol...u waited all that time for a whack a$$ Beyonce quote!

Miz, I'm so disappointed, but you know what, since you want to be around the men so much, go ahead into the barbershop and maybe you can learn a thing or two..

Im not a shit starter, I just keeps it real, son!

As you can see from you being the only one defending your"right to be infringing on male sacred grounds".

Though I do recall seeing some women that like other women in the barbershop getting haircuts just like mine...hmmmmmm...something to ponder about huh, miz?

Is there a secret hidden? LOL!!!!

ooops..did I just say that? hahahahaha

Mizrepresent said...

Thats just wishful thinking on your part dear...Miz is definitely a lady, more than a woman, that only enjoys MEN! Now go back to your marbles, and toy trucks, oh and your Man Law BS! Have a great day! Now, i'm done, SON!

JustMeWriting said...

She was in there checking up on here dude...because she must not have anything else to do...and I don't think she'd like her dude all up in the hair salon (if she worked in one) with all the women looking at him...talkin bout, "OOOH...WHO THAT" I'm sure she'd feel somekinda way. So chill lady, and I'll see you when i get home.

dc_speaks said...

Miz....ok ok...I'll be quiet. You win this time!
